Course Description

International Humanitarian Law: 9:40 to 11:10 a.m. (Central time) MTWRF July 20-24 & July 27-31.

1 credit.

This course aims to address major challenges for international humanitarian law in the context of non-international armed conflicts. Starting from the distinction between riots and civil unrest on the one hand and situations of (non-international) armed conflicts on the other hand, we will not only discuss the status of members of organized armed groups, government forces, and civilians, but we will focus on difficult issues such as the protection of civilians and detention, in particular. In order to provide a solid basis for discussion we will dive into a number of case studies, including some of the most pertinent crises of today, namely Yemen, Syria and Libya. Grading will be based on student presentations. Instructor — Prof. Dr. Thilo Marauhn.
