Course Description
This course will survey the bodies of law that constitute intellectual property: trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks and patents. The policy rationales for each body of law will be explored. The course is appropriate for students with solid background in legal analysis of cases, statutes, and the Constitution as applied to concrete problems. The course provides a foundation for students taking advanced courses in intellectual property, international law, and transactional legal practice, especially where the last two overlap with intellectual property law and policy (e.g. WTO, licensing, technology transfer). Although Intro to Intellectual Property will generally not be a prerequisite for these advanced courses, some knowledge of the basics will be presumed in more advanced courses such as Copyright and Patent.
